THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, SUNDAY, JUNE 2, 1895.

MORE THAN NINETY YEARS ON EARTH

The funeral will take place from his son's residence this morning at 9 o'clock - interment at Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA.

Mr. David G. Wylie, Sr., one of Atlanta's oldest and most honored citizens, has passed to his reward.

The announcement of his death appeared in yesterday morning's Constitution.

Last September Mr. Wylie celebrated his ninetieth birthday and to all appearances he seemed to be in good health for a man of his advanced years. About two months ago, however, he began to fail and his death was expected momentarily. He gained strength after this and continued to improve until a few days ago, when the signs of approaching dissolution began to appear and the old man entered the dark valley of the shadow of death.

For many years Mr. Wylie had resided in this city and though he had never been in active business, on account of his informities, he was known to hundreds of people in this city.

He was the father of Mr. James R. Wylie and of Captain David G. Wylie. He was, perhaps, the oldest citizen of Atlanta at the time of his death.

Peacefully at 1 o'clock yesterday morning the old gentleman passed to his reward. He died at the residence of his son, Captain D. G. Wylie, on Spring Street.

Mr. Wylie has had a remarkable career and was a man of profoundly religious and thoughtful mind. In 1804, on the 7th of September, he was born in Chester, S.C. of Irish parents and surrounded by the best infulences and most painstaking care, he grew to manhood strong in intellect and vigorous of body, with a character developed under clean, wholesome thoughts and pure, moral deeds.

In eighteen hundred and twenty-six he married Miss Martha Robinson and by her reared eight children.

He removed to Fairfield District, South Carolina, and held the position of sheriff of that district from 1836 to 1840.

From Fairfield District Mr. Wylie then removed to Cass County, Georgia, where he engaged in the pursuit of farming until 1862, and then to south Georgia, when he became possessed of the western fever and set out to Arkansas to reside in 1862.

In the interim he lost his wife, a charming Christian woman, and married the second time Miss Nancy Price, who bore him four children, two of whom still live. Mrs. James M. Orr, of Texarkana: Mrs. B. L. Key, of Dallas County, Arkansas: Captain James R. Wylie, of Atlanta, and Captain David G. Wylie, of Atlanta, being the issue of the first union.

Mr. Wylie had spent the latter years of his life with his family, dividing the time with his sons in Atlanta and his children in Arkansas.

While his death was not expected, the passing of his soul has cast a sadness over his friends, for he was a good man and one beloved by all who knew him.

Until within the past few months he had remained active and full of physical and mental vigor, which was most remarkable for a man within a few years of being a centenarian.

As a father and friend Mr. Wylie was all that he should have been. He had a high sense of honor, was just and sincere. His relations with the Presbyterian church, of which he was a consistant member, were above criticism, and with his death, only good things can be said in his praise.

Everything that loving hands could do was done to make his last days happy, and his falling asleep was like the rest of a tired young child.

His life was a lesson of religion and love, unselfishness and usefulness, and his children and grandchildren are beautiful types of his inmost goodness and strength.

The funeral services will be held at the residence of Captain D. G. Wylie on Spring Street this morning at 9 o'clock. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Internment at Oakland. The following gentlemen will act as pallbearers: Messrs. John B. Daniel, F.P. Rice, W.T.B. Wilson, E. A. Robertson, James W. Thomas and T. L. Langston.
