Notes about King of Wessex/England Aethelbald of Wessex King of Wessex, King of England

King of Wessex

royal_lineage.ged :

He married his stepmother, Judith.  Aethelbald, King of West Saxons in England.  He signed charters with his father as early as 847 and aided in the great victory over the Danes at Aclea  in 851. It is said that he led a rebellion against his father after Ethelwulf had married Judith of France. Ethelwulf may have withdrawn to Kent, leaving Ethelbald as King in Wessex (c.856). He certainly became King in the West at Aethelwulf's death (858); his brother AEthelbert may have succeeded in the East. Considerable scandal seems to have been caused by his marriage with his father's widow, Judith.
