According to the Journal of John Nicholas Bogert, "She went from Beekman to Geneva in 1819 and except at short intervals always resided there with her brother James, who in order to furnish a home for her and her sister Margaret who preceded her 2 years, established housekeeping. She was a feeble, timid woman dreading thunder, 4th July racket, and made herself wretched for fear some poor sailor might be wrecked in a storm, or someone killed by thunder, and yet she was as devout as a religious recluse. She was the Mary as her sister was the Martha of the family."
