Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774 to Present
DE LA MONTANYA, James, (1798 - 1849)
Representative from New York; born in New York City March 20, 1798; resided in Haverstraw, Rockland County, N.Y.; supervisor of Haverstraw in 1832 and 1833; member of the State assembly in 1833; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1839-March 3, 1841); died in New York City April 29, 1849; interment in the Barnes family burial ground, Stony Point, Rockland County, N.Y.
It is odd that Daniel Ayres, in his diary, writing about his family in 1869 in Brooklyn, New York, did not name James nor Randolph as sons of his aunt Martha Strachan Montanye. Presumably both James and Randolph had died so many years earlier that they had disappeared from the old man's memory. He apparently had a much more vivid memory of the women in the family than any of the men.
In the Diary of Daniel Ayres (1790-1872) [now in the possession of Jim Hoe, 446 Newtown Turnpike, Weston, CT 06883] Daniel Ayres described his relatives as follows:
[page 254] "John J. Montanye is alluded to on pages 250 and 251; he married my Father's half-sister Martha Strockem.
[page 250] "The Montanye children were 3 sons and 5 daughters, viz, Joseph, John J., Ferdinand [sic]; Phebe Sally, Jannette, Martha, and Nancy. Joseph was a captain in the army in the War of 1812; John J. a respectable blacksmith; Ferdinand [sic], member of Congress." [ Note: It was James who was the member of Congress, not Frederick, whom Daniel Ayres insisted on calling Ferdinand.].
