"William de Spine=Joan de Cocton alias de Kinewarton" (CWT-chartfacing page 68, which shows him also to be son of Roger de Spineto and father of Roger, Walter, Henry and William. William seems to have been an unusually wealthy man. In 1257 he bought an interest in land for 4 silver marks. In1275 he paid Hugh de Norfolk and Joan his wife 40 silver marks for an interest in property. In the same year he paid 75 silver marks for more property. "In 1281, January, Wm. de Spineto of Cocton and his wife Joan grant to M., le Botiler a messuagaae in Cocton formerly belonging to Alice, wife of Roger de Kinewarton.. .. . In 1284 absolution of Wm. de Spineto of Cocton and his delivery fromprison . . .For some offence which has been lost in the oblivion of time Williamde Spine had been thrown into prison and excommunicated by the church;apparently he had in some way become indebted to the Archbishop of York to the large amount of L46. . . . 7 Kalends of May, 1284, mandate to the Dean of Warwick to publish absolution from excommunication granted William de Spineto of Cocton, also a mandate to the Sheriff of Warwick to deliver him from prison." (Ibid, note 2, which explains William's son Roger transferred interests in Cocton to the Bishop of Worcester until 1295, when apparently the claim had been paid)
