De Kerkelijke Staat was tot het midden van de 19e eeuw uitgegroeid tot ongeveer een vierde van het Italië wat wij nu kennen. Als de Liberalen en de Nationalisten ook in Italië steeds meer invloed krijgen, wordt paus Pius IX 'vriendelijk doch dringend' verzocht grondgebied af te staan voor de Italiaanse eenwording. De paus doet een oproep aan alle katholieken in de wereld om de Kerkelijke Staat te verdedigen. Met name in Nederland wordt gehoor gegeven aan deze oproep. Zo'n 3.300 vrijgezelle mannen melden zich.
Ook Mathias Carl Victor meld zich voor de strijd. Op 3 december 1866 meldt hij zich in Brussel aan. Vanaf 8 december 1866 tot 31 december 1868 heeft hij als Zouaaf vrijwillig gediend in het pauselijk leger. Voor zijn bijdrage aan de overwinning te Mentana in 1867 ontving hij de Mentana-medaille.
