Dit geslacht stamt af van Simon Pietersz Plaatsman, die in 1697 in Oosterend werd geboren als zoon van Pieter Jansz Haan en Trijn Cornelis (bijgenaamd Haane Trijn). Trijn Cornelis, die eerder gehuwd was geweest met Isbrant Jansz Schagen, was zeker een lid van de oorspronkelijke Hoornder familie Plaatsman.
Simon Pietersz Plaatsman was misschien genoemd naar Simon Cornelisz Plaatsman (mogelijk een broer van Trijn Cornelis) of naar een voorvader aan moederskant. De juiste verhouding kon niet worden vastgesteld. De afstamming van Pieter Jansz Haan is niet bekend. Simon Pietersz Plaatsman was kaagschipper en evenals de Hoornder familie gereformeerd. Van zijn afstammelingen is een stamboom afgedrukt in TG I op blz. 336. In de 18de eeuw waren het bijna allemaal schippers en zeelieden.
