Hij was heer van Merenstein en woonde op het huis Merenstein te Beverwijk.
Hij werd door zijn huwelijk heer van Kenenburg en verkocht later Merenstein aan de Reguliere monniken van Sion te Beverwijk.
In 1566 tekende hij het Compromis der Edelen en is op 1 spt. 1566 met Hendrik van Brederode in Hoorn; op 2 sept. was hij met enkele andere edelen in Alkmaar getuige van de plundering van het klooster der Minnebroeders, waaraan hij geen deel had. Hij diende onder Lodewijk van Nassau, daarna bij de Watergeuzen en werd in 1573 benoemd tot krijgscommissaris van de Prins van Oranje. Hij werd kapitein in Staatse dienst en baljuw en schout van Den Haag (1584-1586).
