Betty Shaarda, of McBain, went to be with her Lord Thursday morning, Nov. 17, 2011, at Autumnwood of McBain. She was 89.

She was born on June 21, 1922, in Richland Township of Missaukee County to Seitse and Sena (Bolt) Ellens and they preceded her in death. On Oct. 10, 1941, at the Ellens family home, she married Robert John Shaarda and he preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1994.

She had been a member of the McBain Christian Reformed Church and the ladies aide there. She was active in the Farm Bureau and volunteered at Autumnwood of McBain and the Red Cross. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, baking and canning.

Survivors include her children, Don (Joyce) Shaarda of McBain, Ed (Norma) Shaarda of Jamestown, Lillian (Doug) Langan of Grand Rapids, Rose (John) VanDyke of Hudsonville, Paul (Carole) Shaarda and Mark (Mary) Shaarda all of McBain; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; her brother, Albertus (Wilma) Ellens of McBain; two sisters, Sena (Evart) Helms and Ann DeYoung all of Jenison; sisters in law, Carolyn Meyering of Grand Rapids and Helen Bronkema of Kalamazoo.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Ruby Jewel Lamkin; an infant brother; four sisters; six brothers and many in-laws.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at the McBain Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Jaclyn Busch officiating. Burial will be at Mount View Cemetery in McBain. Friends may meet the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday (today) at the Burkholder Funeral Home in McBain.
