Né au début du VIIe siècle, Dagobert devint roi d'Austrasie en 623 puis, à la mort de son père, roi des Francs (629). Lorsque mourut son frère
Caribert (632), il récupéra l'Aquitaine qu'il unit, sous sa domination, à la Bourgogne, puis installa sa capitale à Paris. Il fut le plus puissant des rois mérovingiens, s'appuyant sur divers conseillers, dont les futurs saint Éloi et saint Ouen. Il imposa son autorité aux Gascons et à une partie des Bretons mais dut cependant accepter l'indépendance de l'Austrasie (634), qu'il confia à son fils Sigebert. Peu avant sa mort, à Saint-Denis en 639, Dagobert donna la Neustrie et la Bourgogne à son second fils, Clovis II. Le royaume franc fut donc à nouveau divisé et la monarchie mérovingienne en déclin.
