Notes about Herbert Vernon Ferree

Herbert Vern Ferree, age 83, of Aurora, CO, passed away Wednesday, February 20 2013 at the Colorado State and Veteran's Nursing Home. He was born four miles south and two miles east of Matheson, CO on March 4 1929 to Vern and Pauline (Smith) Ferree on the Ferree Family Homestead. Herb was the oldest of six siblings. He attended rural Elbert County Schools. At the age of 8, Herbert was sent to the Odd Fellows Home in Canon City, CO due to the death of his mother, July 5 1937. He was able to return to the Ferree Homestead after his father remarried, June 4 1939. His father died, May 29 1941 and at age 12, he was left to the care of his step-mother. Herb set out, at age 18, to conquer life on his own with the clothes on his back and just a few dollars in his pocket. He walked into a general store in Brighton, CO where he met an Elder in the Church of the Nazarene. This gentleman took Herb under his wing, leading him to faith in the church. Herb entered the US Army on March 1 1951 in Denver, CO where he served his country in the Korean Conflict receiving the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged on February 24 1953. Herb married Miss Margaret Lucille Abbott on March 5 1953 in Byrdstown, TN. To this union there were eight pregnancies, three ended in miscarriages. Herb lived in Greeley, CO after his marriage. He moved to California and then, back to Colorado. His marriage ended in 1962 and Herb moved back to California where he worked as an Electronics Technician. He later moved back to Colorado. Herbert was a member of the Nazarene Faith as well as the VFW. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Sherri Lin Ferree; one brother, Phillip Benjamin Ferree; an infant grandson, Ross Wayne Ferree; and two sisters, Beulah Fern (Ferree Noy) Nicholas and Gladys Norma (Pearson, Bridges, Vernon) Page. He was survived by four children; Herbert (Pamm) Ferree Jr, Michael (Rosa) Ferree, Marsha (Robert) Rains, and Benjamin Ferree; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother, Paul (Virginia) Pearson; one sister, Dolores (Wilgus) Street; several nephews and nieces; several cousins; extended family and church friends. Viewing was at 1:30 to 2:30pm on Friday, March 1 2013 at Love Funeral Home in Limon, CO and graveside services with Military Honors were held at 3pm at Pleasant Plains Cemetery, in Elbert County, CO. Herbert was laid to rest next to his mother, per his request..
