    Counts of Blois
*Before 1216 he married Agnès de Bar, daughter of Thibaud I, Count de Bar & Luxembourg and Ermesinde de Bar. In 1225 Hugh became notorious for his treatment of Agnès; from horseback, he dragged her by the hair to the town of Couilly to punish her for an adulterous relationship with a page. She died of her wounds.

In April 1226 Hugh married Marie DမAvesnes, Countess de Blois, daughter and heiress of Gautier II DမAvesnes, seigneur DမAvesnes, Guise & Conde, and Marguerite de Blois. To show repentance for his abuse of Agnès, Hugh founded, with Marie's assistance, the first abbey of Pont aux Dames, near the place of his misdeed. He and Marie had four sons of whom three, Jean, Guy II and Gaucher IV had progeny.
Between 1225 and 1230 Hugh strengthened the ramparts around Crécy which he had built with his father. His second wife Marie died in 1241, and he then married Mahaut de Guînes, daughter of Arnold II, Count de Guines and Béatrix de Bourbourg. This marriage produced no offspring. Hugh set off for the Holy Land with the Seventh Crusade, which left France in 1248. Passing Avignon, there was a skirmish with some villagers in which Hugh was killed on 9 April. Most of the 50 knights of his retinue returned home after the incident. -The Plantagenet Ancestry, Baltimore, 1975, Turton, Lt.Col. W. H. 167.
