Hugh (or Hugo) (c. 780 ·Äì 837) was the count of Tours and Sens during the reigns of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, until his disgrace in February 828.
Hugh had many possessions in Alsace, as well as the County of Sens. He also held the convent of St-Julien-d'Auxerre. He appeared in 811 as an envoy or ambasciator to Constantinople with Haido, Bishop of Basel, and Aio, Duke of Friuli, to renew the Pax Nicephori. In 821, he allied himself by marriage to the royal family; his daughter Ermengard married Louis' son Lothair. In 824, he took part in an expedition in Brittany and, in 826, he accompanied the Empress Judith to the baptism of Harald Klak in Ingelheim. His other daughter, Adelaide, married Conrad I, Count of Auxerre (died 862).[1] She took as her second husband Robert the Strong. She was dead by 886, when Walahfrid Strabo included her epitaph in a poem of his.

In 827, Hugh, along with Matfrid of Orléans, was commissioned by Louis to recruit an army with his son Pepin I of Aquitaine and repel the invasion of the Marca Hispanica by the Moslem general Abu Marwan. Hugh and Matfrid delayed until the threat had passed. For this he was given the nickname Timidus or the Timid. Barcelona being the greatest military accomplishment of Louis' career, the Spanish March meant much to him and Hugh and Matfrid found themselves greatly disfavoured at court. They were deposed in February of the next year.

He remained very influential as the father-in-law of Lothair. He joined Matfrid in inciting Lothair to rebellion and had all his lands confiscated in Gaul. He remained highly influential in Italy, where Lothair created him "duke of Locate" (dux de Locate). He became a benefactor of the cathedral of Monza. According to the Annales Bertiniani, he and Lambert of Nantes died during an epidemic in Italy in 837. News of their deaths·Äîand that of Wala of Corbie in an earlier Italian epidemic in the fall of the previous year·Äîgreatly distressed Louis the Pious, but the opponents of Lothair interpreted it as divine judgement.[2][3]

¬â€ ¬â€  LIUTFRIDE (FAMILY of HUGUES¬â€ Comte de TOURS)
¬â€
¬â€
According to Thegan, this family descended from the early 8th century dukes in Alsace (see Chapter 1.A) as he refers to the wife of Emperor Lothar as "filiam Hugi comitis, qui erat de stirpe cuiusdam ducis nomine Etih"[135].¬â€  The¬â€ Miraculis Sancti Germani¬â€ refers to Adelheid, daughter of Hugues Comte de Tours, as ·Äúprimorum et ipsa natalium perinde titulus gloriosa·Äù[136].¬â€  This may be hyperbole, but the wording does suggest an unusually illustrious ancestry.¬â€  The precise relationship has not yet been identified but the name ·ÄúLiutfried·Äù does suggest a family connection with the earlier Alsatian ducal family.¬â€  Such a connection could also explain (1) the high profile marriages of Hugues·Äôs daughters into the imperial family and the families of some of the most prominent nobility at the Carolingian court and (2) the extent of Hugues·Äôs property interests in Alsace which are revealed by the charter with Wissenbourg which records exchanges which he made 2 Sep 1820[137].¬â€  . ¬â€
¬â€
¬â€
1.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ LIUTFRIED¬â€ [I] (-after 11 Jan 813).¬â€  "Imma" donated property to Fulda by charter dated 11 Jan 813, subscribed by "Liutfrid comes"[138].¬â€  His connection with the family of the later Grafen im Sundgau has not been ascertained, although his name does suggest a relationship which could have been through the male or female line.¬â€
¬â€
2.¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ HUGUES¬â€ (-20 Oct 837, bur Monza).¬â€  Thegan refers to the wife of Emperor Lothar as "filiam Hugi comitis, qui erat de stirpe cuiusdam ducis nomine Etih" and in the following paragraph names her "Irmingarda"[139].¬â€  "Karolus·Ä¶augustus·Ä¶imperator Romanum·Ä¶rex Francorum et Langobardorum" donated property "in pago Andegavino in loco Laniaco·Ä¶et in pago Rodonico" to Kloster Pr√ºm by charter dated 28 Apr 807 which names "Hugo¬â€ comes"[140].¬â€ ¬â€ Comte de Tours: Einhard names "Haido episcopus Baslensus et Hugus comes Toronicus et Aio Langobardus de Foroiluii" as imperial¬â€ missi¬â€ who met the¬â€ missi¬â€ from Constantinople in 811[141].¬â€  The¬â€ Annales Fuldenses¬â€ record that the emperor sent "Haitonem¬â€ Basilensem episcopus et Hug comitem Turonicum et Aio Langobardum de Aquileia" as¬â€ missi¬â€ to Constantinople in 811 to confirm the peace "cum Niceforo"[142].¬â€  The¬â€ Gesta¬â€ Francorum¬â€ names "Hug comitem Turonicum" in 811[143].¬â€  Timiolus and abbot of St Julien d'Auxerre 811.¬â€  The extensive interests of Hugues in Alsace are confirmed by the following document: a charter confirms imperial agreement to an exchange of property agreed 2 Sep 820 between ·ÄúHuc quondam comes·Äù and ·Äúmonasterium...Wizunburg·Äù which specifies numerous places in Alsace[144].¬â€  The reference ·Äúquondam·Äù is unexplained unless the document was prepared later than the date specified, either during the period which followed Hugues·Äôs asset confiscations in [828] or after he died.¬â€  Thegan's¬â€ Vita Hludowici Imperatoris¬â€ records that Emperor Louis was met at "Compendium" by "Pippinus filius eius cum magnatis primis patris sui·Ä¶Hug et Matfrido·Ä¶Gotefrido"[145].¬â€  The¬â€ Vita Hludowici Imperatoris¬â€ names "Hugonem et Mathfridum comites" as¬â€ missi¬â€ of Pepin King of Aquitaine [in 827][146].¬â€  Wilsdorf highlights the likelihood that the failure of their campaign against the Moors in the march of Spain at this time was due to delay in Hugues and Matfried arriving with their army in time to prevent the devastation of areas around Barcelona and Girona[147].¬â€  This appears confirmed by the¬â€ Vita Hludowici Imperatoris¬â€ which records that the affair was submitted to an assembly at Aachen in Feb 828 which recommended the confiscation of their assets as punishment[148].¬â€  This presumably included the county of Tours, in the case of Hugues who, as noted below, was called ·Äútimidus·Äù by Thegan.¬â€  Wilsdorf highlights the probable involvement of Hugues in the plots in [830/36], resulting from the rivalry between Emperor Louis (and his wife Judith) and the emperor·Äôs eldest son Lothaire, which resulted in further periods of successive rehabilitation and disgrace for Hugues, culminating in his exile to northern Italy[149].¬â€  Thegan's¬â€ Vita Hludowici Imperatoris¬â€ records that "Hlutharius" submitted to his father Emperor Louis I [in 836] followed by "socer eius Hug timidus"[150].¬â€  The¬â€ Vita Hludowici Imperatoris¬â€ records that "Wala Corbeiensis abbas, Matfridus, Hugo, Lantbertus, Godefridus, itemque filius eius Godefridus, Agimbertus comes Pertensis·Ä¶sed et Richardus" died between "Kal Sep usque ad missam sancti Martini" [in 836][151].¬â€  The¬â€ Gesta Francorum¬â€ records that "Lantbertus et Hugus" were among the "plureo ex primoribus Itali√¶" who were killed at Ticino "837 III Kal Ian noctu octies" when "tremuisse perhibetur"[152].¬â€  The¬â€ Annales¬â€ Fuldenses¬â€ also record the earthquake at Ticino in Italy "837 III Kal Ian" in which "plures ex primoribus Itali√¶" were killed including "Lantbertus et Hugus"[153].¬â€ ¬â€ m¬â€ AVA, daughter of --- (-4 Sep 839, bur Monza).¬â€  Her marriage is inferred from the testament of her supposed son-in-law "Gerardus [comes]" who names "coniugis me√¶·Ä¶Berth√¶·Ä¶genitoribus atque parentibus·Ä¶Luthardi et Grimildis atque·Ä¶Hugonis et Bav√¶·Ä¶filiis et filiabus ipsorum"[154].¬â€  Hugues & his wife had six children:¬â€
a)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ERMENGARDE¬â€ (-20 Mar 851, bur Kloster Erstein, near Strasbourg).¬â€  Thegan refers to the wife of Emperor Lothar as "filiam Hugi comitis, qui erat de stirpe cuiusdam ducis nomine Etih" and in the following paragraph names her "Irmingarda"[155].¬â€  The¬â€ Annales¬â€ Xantenses¬â€ record the marriage in 821 of "Ludewicus imperator·Ä¶filio suo Lothario" and "Ermingardam filiam Hugonis comitis Turonicorum"[156].¬â€  The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Ermengardis filia·Ä¶Hugonis Provincie ducis vel comitis" as wife of "Lotharius imperator"[157].¬â€  She founded Kloster Erstein in Alsace 849.¬â€ ¬â€ m¬â€ (Thionville, Moselle mid-Oct 821)¬â€ Emperor LOTHAR I, son of Emperor LOUIS I "le Pieux" & his first wife Ermengardis [de Hesbaye] (795-Kloster Pr√ºm 29 Sep 855, bur Kloster Pr√ºm). ¬â€ He was installed as¬â€ LOTHAR I King of Lotharingia¬â€ in 843.¬â€
b)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ADELAIS¬â€ (-after 866).¬â€  The¬â€ Miraculis Sancti Germani¬â€ name "Adheleid" as wife of "Chuonradus princeps", noting that she was ·Äúprimorum et ipsa natalium perinde titulus gloriosa·Äù[158].¬â€  A poem by¬â€ Walahfridus¬â€ Strabus¬â€ records the epitaph of "Adelheidam"[159].¬â€  The primary source which confirms her parentage has not yet been identified.¬â€  Some secondary works[160]¬â€ assert that the second husband of Adelais was¬â€ Robert¬â€ "le Fort" [Capet].¬â€  If this is correct, Adelais must have been Comte Robert's second or third wife as Conrad died after 862 by which date Robert's known children were already born.¬â€  The assertion appears based on the Chronicle of St B√©nigne de Dijon which names "duo filii Rotberti Andegavorum comitis, frs Hugonis abbatis, senior Odo·Ä¶Robertus alter"[161].¬â€  Settipani states that the passage is a 12th century interpolation and has little historical value, although he does suggest that it is likely that the wife of Comte Robert was a close relation of Adelais without providing the basis for this statement[162].¬â€  A family connection between Comte Robert and Conrad Comte de Paris is also suggested by the former being invested with the county of Auxerre in 865, after this county was confiscated from the latter (as recorded by Hincmar[163]), on the assumption that there was some basis of heredity behind the transmission of counties in France at that time (which is probable, but remains unproven).¬â€ ¬â€ m¬â€ CONRAD¬â€ "l'Ancien"¬â€ Comte de Paris, son of WELF I Graf in Swabia & his wife Heilwig --- (-22 Mar [862/66]).¬â€  ¬â€ ¬â€
c)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ BERTA¬â€ (-[6 Nov] 877).¬â€  Her parentage is indicated by her husband's testament under which "Gerardus [comes]" names "coniugis me√¶·Ä¶Berth√¶·Ä¶genitoribus atque parentibus·Ä¶Luthardi et Grimildis atque·Ä¶Hugonis et Bav√¶·Ä¶filiis et filiabus ipsorum"[164].¬â€  Pope John VIII recalls "Gerardus comes·Ä¶cum Berta quondam conjuge sua" as founders of the monastery referred to in his letter[165].¬â€  Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks confirmed the foundation of the monastery "in pago Avalensi in parrochia Augustudunensis civitatis in loco·Ä¶Virziliacus" by "Gerardus·Ä¶comes", with the consent of "coniugis sue Berth√¶", by charter dated 6 Jan 868[166].¬â€  The¬â€ Chronico¬â€ Vezeliacensi¬â€ records that "Berta¬â€ comitissa hujus loci fundatrix" died in 844 and was buried "apud Pulterias"[167], although the year is incorrect.¬â€  The 13th¬â€ century obituary of the¬â€ Eglise primatiale de Lyon¬â€ records the death "VIII Id Nov" of "Berta¬â€ comitissa"[168].¬â€ ¬â€ m¬â€ GERARD¬â€ [de Roussillon]¬â€ Comte de Vienne, son of [LIUTHARD & his wife Grimhild ---] (-[11 Feb or 4 Mar] 874, bur Avignon).¬â€
d)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ HUGUES¬â€ (-before 24 Jan 835, bur Milan San Ambrogio).¬â€  Wilsdorf records that Hugues and Liutfried [II], sons of Hugues, accompanied their father to northern Italy where the younger Hugues died and was buried in Milan, as confirmed by a charter dated 24 Jan 835 under which his brother Lothar I donated property to San Ambrogio at the request of his wife who was Hugues·Äôs sister[169].¬â€
e)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ LIUTFRIED¬â€ [II] (-[864/66]).¬â€  The¬â€ Annales Bertiniani¬â€ name "Liutfrido avunculo suo et Waltario" recording their support for "Hlotharius [rex]" when he purported to marry "Waldradam concubinam" in 862 and crown her[170].¬â€
-¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ see below.¬â€
f)¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ ¬â€ BERENGAR¬â€ (-[838]).¬â€  The¬â€ Vita Hludowici Imperatoris¬â€ names "Beringarii¬â€ H. Turonici¬â€ quondam comitis filii" as a candidate to govern Septimania, in competition with Bernard, adding that he died young [in 838][171].¬â€
