Notes about Gozewijn HOGERS


HOGERS (Gozewijn), in 1636 te Deventer geboren, verwierf zich reeds in zijn jeugd grooten roem door zijne geleerdheid, en werd in plaats van J.G. Graevius hoogleeraar in de Latijnsche letterkunde aan het athenaeum te Deventer. Later trad hij in de staatkundige loopbaan en werd hij burgemeester van Deventer. Hij was een moedig voorstander der vrijheid en vriend van den beroemden Rabo Herman Schele, wiens geschriften na zijn dood in zijne handen kwamen en door hem werden uitgegeven. In 1672 was hij lid der vergadering der staten generaal en werd tot het gezantschap aan den koning van Frankrijk benoemd, doch door Eeck, afgevaardigde wegens Groningen, vervangen. In ditzelfde jaar werd hij, bij de verandering der regering, van al zijne ambten verlaten. Sedert leefde hij voor de wetenschappen en stierf den 14 Maart 1676 in den ouderdom van 40 jaren.

Hogers beoefende ook niet ongelukkig de Latijnsche poëzy. Graevius, Hoeufft en Peerlkamp hebben zijne gedichten geprezen.
