Denise_____Original Message_____From: Barbara Beck Hi Denise, Thanks for all the good information, every little bit helps! I have no idea how this oath was used, but the oath was usually for head rights you received 50 acres of land for each person you had in the family. Also there was an oath of allegiance to the king, will do a little more investigating! The white referred to the color of your skin. I copied this from the book I found in Lenoir County. Did you get the address for the learning center? It may shed more light on the subject, they are real nice there and I'm sure they will help you out.The Mary Nichols Loid could have married a Rasberry, it was quite the thing do, at this time in history, to marry a cousin to either keep the land or the money in the family!!!-----1725Forwarded by Barbara Beck - COLONIAL BERTIE CO NC DEED BOOKS A_H 1720_1757Book A _Page 428 - Charles Jones & wife Sarah to John Rasbery April 25, 1725. 70 pds. for 610 a. adj. "We must note that John Jr. (No.7) son of John Sr., if still living as of 1779, would be about 75 years old, so in all probability, John (No .7) had died before 1779, there in Dobbs County. It is also likely that Joseph died there in Dobbs County and before a tax list that was compiled there in 1780.-----From Page 50, "RASBERRY RECORDS AND REMARKS", by Edna Monette Rasberry Burtis, August 29, 1988 : Reviewing the people on the NC 1790 Census, it is apparent to me that Francis and John are sons of John Jr. (No.7) and that DANIEL is John (No.7)'s grandson. They are still in Dobbs County. The John in this census can only be John (No.9), son of John Jr.-----MiscellaneousDate: Tue, 19 May 1998 14:07:21 -0500 - From: Nettie Craig (e-mail adres niet gepubliceerd) - Subject: John Rasberry Jr - To: (e-mail adres niet gepubliceerd).net - Reply-to: (e-mail adres niet gepubliceerd), I'm a descendant of John Rasberry Jr and his wife Elizabeth ? I hope this helps somebody. - Nettie-----JOHN RASBURY, Jr. (Second Generation)(Child number 8 above) is believed to be our ancestor, and father of OUR JOSEPH. Who is John's wife? One researcher, Dr. E.A. Rasberry, has an old Bible Record that says, "Jesse Rasberry son of John Rasberry and Elizabeth his wife was born May the 10 day 1738. Jesse Rasberry, son of John Rasberry and Elizabeth, his wife, departed this life 5 day Sept 1821." Assuming that Joseph and Jesse are brothers, then this Elizabeth is probably the mother of our Joseph too.Who are John's Children? Edna Burtis believes, "John Jr' s sons are Joseph, Francis and John." I believe his children are Joseph, Jesse, Horace, Penelope, and John plus others.Holloman also stated, "It appears evident Rachel Rasbury, Senior, was widow of Jesse Rasbury and had a dower on a part of his lands on north side of Sandy Run in Greene County by 1823. Jesse died ca 1820-21. He was a brother to Joseph Rasbury, Sr. , and of Benjamin Rasberry and Robert Rasbury and of other s not yet proved. These were sons of John Rasbury, Jr., who moved to the area of Sandy run in Craven County (now Greene County) from Bertie County (now Hertford County area about 1743)."[Editor's Note: Rachel was not widow of Jesse, Winneford was. See Bible Records. I can't figure out how Rachel fit s in. I thought Benjamin and Robert were children of the Joseph mentioned in Supreme Court Case #2483. However, I did find a record o f one Robert Rasberry in Davidson County, Tennessee Count y Court Minutes 783 - 1792, p 49 "Robert Raspberry ack a B/S (bonded servant) to Francis Hodge, land Nashville Tuesday, 4 April 1786." This requires further research.]CHILDREN OF JOHN RASBURY, Jr.1. JOSEPH RASBURY married LYDIA YOUNG (See Holloman , Murphy and Burtis comments)2. HORACE RASBURY (See 1769 Dobbs County, NC, tax list.) No further record.3. JOHN RASBURY, III (See 1769 Dobbs County, NC, tax list.) No further record. He may be the John Rasbury who went to Anson County, NC, or to South Carolina.4. FRANCIS RASBURY (See Edna Burtis deductions.)5. JESSE RASBURY was born May the 10 day 1738 and departed this life 5 day Sept 1821. He married (1) Mary and ( 2) Winneford. (See Dr. C R Holloman notes and Dr. E.A. Rasberry, Jr., Bible Records and comments)6. PENELOPE RASBURY, born 26 Mar 1749 in NC, and died 16 Oct 1822 in Edgecombe County, NC. She married (1) Obed Eason. He died 28 Jul 1784 in Edgecombe Co. Their children: Isaac, Nathan, Obed, Jr born 1766 and died 12 May 1865 , Alexander City, Ala, Elizabeth and Penelope. Later Penelope married (2) Major James Scarborough and had two Scarborough children: John Rasbury born 1787 and Polly Palmer born 1794.
