Bart Aaron Nymeyer was born in the town of Balk, Friesland, theNetherlands, in 1844.
Bart Aaron Nymeyer came to this country at the age of 22 with hisparents, six brothers and three sisters, settling in Goshen, Indiana. B.A.spoke no English then, but two years later he was teaching school inGoshen, Indiana, by then having mastered the language. In the late 1860's hewas teaching in Marshall, MO, and in 1872 he married one of his students,Nancy Margareth Grabeel. After daughter Susan was born in 1873, thefamily headed west; probably in search of the Golden Eldorado. In 1875another daughter , Anna Josephine, was born in Washington Territory.Margareth Lucy, Frederick, and Tena Lucille were also born. In August of1882 a diphtheria swept through Moscow and the three oldest girls diedwithin one week.
Two years later, the Nymeyers joined a wagon train headed for thepromised land of Texas. Leaving the group at Rising Star, Texas, theNymeyers invested their savings in a sheep ranch, which faltered andfailed. In 1887 Nymeyer moved his family to New Mexico, settling at thevillage of Seven Rivers. It seems apparent that he taught school there, and he also had surveying instruments and the knowledge for using them.In 1888, Nymeyer was hired by C.B. Eddy of the Pecos Irrigation andInvestment Company to survey and locate the town of Eddy, approximately17 miles south of Seven Rivers. The field work and surveys of Eddytownship were done under the supervision of B.A. Nymeyer. B.A. Nymeyerbrought his family to Eddy on March 4, 1889, and they moved into one ofthe first houses built there, the old Eddy House, a hostelry near therailroad depot. Mrs Nymeyer ran the hotel, the first in Carlsbad.Nymeyer became Eddy County Surveyor, a post he held, with the exceptionof one year, until the day of his death.
Shortly after the turn of the century, Nymeyer along with others, wasinstrumental in forming the Democratic Party in Republican-dominated EddyCo. B.A. served as first county chairman of the party.
Bart Aaron Nymeyer died on Oct 1, 1925 while on a surveying mission southof Carlsbad, NM.
Apparently there was a great rift between the families of John and thoseof Bart. We do not know why.
