William Joseph Lowry was born on June 7th 1838 in Greensboro, Georgia. But his parents were at that time residents of Louisville, Jefferson County, Georgia. His parents were Prof. William Strong Lowry and Eliza (Stevens) Lowry. He enjoyed good educational advantages, and was graduated from Erskine College in 1838. He probably joined the church at Bethel A.R.P. in Jefferson County, Georgia in his youth. He was received as a student of Theology by the Second Presbytery in 1859 and studied theology at Erskine Seminary in Due West, South Carolina.
Rev. Lowry's first work was done in Kentucky and Tennessee . His first pastorate was Lebanon, Alabama. He also preached at Camden and other points in Alabama. About 1865 he was called to the G. A. Presbyterian Church in Selma, Alabama. He accepted this call and served that church for a number of years with great acceptance. In 1875, he was called to the First Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Kentucky and continued until his death, as one of the most useful and eloquent ministers in that city.
Rev. William Lowry married Miss Maragret McDowell Bell on August 13th 1861. Known as Maggie, she was a daughter of Robert and Nancy Bell of Starkville , Mississippi; where they were married. They had three children to survive to adulthood and two that died in infancy. Maggie died in Selma , Alabama in 1872 . On January 23rd 1874, he married Miss Mary C. Dixon; no known children where born to this union.
Rev. William Joseph Lowry departed this life on November 10th 1877 in Louisville, Kentucky; where he was pastor of First Presbyterian of that city. His remains where brought back to Selma and laid to rest next to his infant children and first wife, Maggie.
