REV, JOHN HOWSE may have been born about 1570. Some researchers have associated Rev. John Howse with a minor noble family of the same name having estates at Besthorpe near Attleborough and Morningthorpe Manor near Long Stratton in County Norfolk. This geography would be favorable in support of his education at Cambridge as well as a marriage in nearby Suffolk, and his probable Puritan sympathies, since the general region of East Anglia was a stronghold of Puritan sentiment. But, there is no evidence to support these theories. Also, it is commonly asserted that John Howse was born at Eastwell in County Kent and was the son of Thomas Howes and Alice Hinton. Not only is this highly unlikely but, there is no documentary evidence in support of such a presumption.
Due to the custom of primogeniture it was common for younger sons of country gentlemen to enter the service of the Church, since they did not inherit land. It appears that John Howes received his B.A. form St. John’s College and matriculated "sizar" at Cambridge, about 1590. [A "sizar" is a student who receives some form of assistance such as meals, lower fees or lodging during his period of study, in return for doing a defined job. Traditionaly, Sizars had to earn their keep as servants to the wealthier students. "Sizars were sons of poor parents, frequently the clergy".] Apparently, John was not the son of minor nobility. He would have received his M.A. about 1592 and is listed in the Alumni Cantabrigienes, with the further note that he was rector at Eastwell, Kent in 1610.
Saint Mary’s Church at Eastwell appears to have been an important parish to which curacies of smaller neighboring parishes, e.g., St. James’ at Egerton and St. Mary’s at Little Chart, were likely attached. Before his appointment as Rector of Eastwell, he had likely served as a lower ranking clergyman, e.g., a curate, in some other parish. His name appears in the Parish Register of Egerton, Kent as early as 16 Apr 1592 perhaps documenting the begging of his service as Curate of that parish.
It has been asserted, without significant substantiation, that John Howse and Alice Lloyd married August 30, 1593, at Lavenham in County Suffolk. Again, there is no documentary source affirming this date or his wife's identity (although, her given name as "Alice" can be established from John's will.) Nevertheless, the origins of John Howse and his wife remain entirely unsubstantiated and must be properly regarded as unknown.
Rev. John Howse served as curate at St James Church, Egerton, Kent from 1592 to 1596. During this time his first three daughters were born. Elizabeth about 1593, Hanna bap. 5 May 1594 and Penninah bap. 11 April 1595. Thus, John would have to have been married by about May of 1592.
Here we have a six or seven-year gap in John’s service and between the birth of his children. A gap such as this often indicates the death of a wife and the subsequent remarriage. If this were the case, then Alice would have been the second wife. There was one child born near the end of this gap, Drucilla Howse, born about 1601 in England.
John became Rector of the parish church at Eastwell (St. Mary's) in 1603. The first official act with his signature was the christening of his son John Howse Jr., 19 Jun 1603. Four more children were christened at Eastwell during John’s tenure there. Priscilla, 1605; Thomas, 1607; Samuel, 1610 and Henry, 1612. John Howse remained in this parish for the rest of his life. He died there and was buried in the churchyard.
There seems to be adequate evidence to indicate that the Rev. John Howse was a Puritan or at least had Puritan leanings. His daughter, Hanna, was married to Rev. John Lothrop in 1610. Rev. Lothrop was serving at the time as the curate of Egerton, Kent. There is no doubt that he was a Puritan and it is doubtful that he would have been allowed to hold his post at Egerton let alone marry the Rector’s daughter unless the Rev Howse was at least somewhat sympathetic to the Puritan cause.
Of his children, at least three emigrated to New England, which suggests that at least some members of the Howse family had Puritan sentiments. Likewise, when John's son, Thomas, died in London in 1643 or 1644, he made a specific bequest in his will to Mr. John Goodwine, minister at St. Stephen's Church in Coleman Street. Indeed, a previous pastor of this church had been Rev. John Davenport, a prominent Puritan clergyman who had been persecuted by Archbishop Laud and emigrated to New Haven. He also lists as administrators, the famous Puritan, Praise God Barbon [Speaker of the Parliament during the Commonwealth period, known as the “Barebones Parliament”, and William Granger, who was brought up before the High Commission along with Barbons’s wife, Sara. All, were members of Rev. Lothrop’s congregation in London. Even so, it does not seem that Rev. Howse ever broke completely with the Church of England.
The Nuncupative [Declared orally as opposed to in writing.] Will of John House, Clarke, parson of Eastwell [co. Kent], made a week before his death, which was 30 August 1630. To my wife, Alice, all my goods and I make her my sole executrix. Witnesses: Elizabeth Champion, one of the testator’s daughters, Drusilla Howes, and Mris Joane Wallis. Proved 8 September 1630 by the executrix named. (Consistory Court of Canterbury, vol. 49, fo. 306.)
The Rev. John Howse died, 30 Aug 1630, at Eastwell Parish, Kent, England and was buried, 2 Sep 1630, in the Eastwell church yard. His widow, Alice, died 8 Nov 1653 in Kent, England.
