NOTE:zeemtouwer, in 1568 verbannen door Alva en vertrekt naar Wezel, in 1571 door Willem van Oranje teruggeroepen om de gemene zaak van Nederland ter hand te nemen. vroedschap van leiden 1573-1603, schepen 1580-1593, burgemeester 1574-1599 en talrijke verdere functies. Tijdens het beleg van Leiden door de spanjaarden in 1574, als burgemeester, brak er een hongersnood uit en kwam er een delegatie burgers naar het stadhuis die wilden dat de stad zich zou overgeven aan de spanjaarden, van der werff heeft toen de burgers toegesproken en gezegd dat men eerst hemzelf zou moeten opeten. Gedenkbord in de hooglandse kerk te leiden(vertaling uit latijn) "johannes, pieter en adriaan van Assendelft, zonen van Bartholomeus en eerbiedige achterneven, hebben de marmeren gedenktafel, hier opgesteld, ter ere van hun grootvader, Pieter Adriaanszoon van der Werff, die aan vele gevaren heeft blootgestaan tot welzijn van hun vaderland, die vele ambten heeft bekleed in dit gemenebest. Die in leiden twaalf keer burgemeester is geweest en in de staten van holland twee maal een waardig lid van deze vergadering, aan wiens standvastigheid, de stad tijdens zijn burgemeesterschap, tweemaal belegerd zijnde, verschuldigd is, dat de stad kloekmoedig heeft verdragen de spaanse legers, de pest, de hongersnood, het muiten van de burgerij, van het gepeupel en de krijgsmacht."
